- Content and topics: 1. Virtual (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Applications in Design and Manufacturing: VR technology can be valuable for the design of products. In a virtual environment, once the application has been built and set up, the engineer is able to experiment, while changing, modifying and interacting with the design. AR technologies aim to support the human operator in complex manufacturing tasks by overlaying virtual information on the physical environment. 2. Digital Manufacturing Digital manufacturing has been considered, over the last decade, as a highly promising set of technologies for reducing product development times and cost as well as for addressing the customization needs, increased product quality, and faster response to the market. Digital Manufacturing includes technologies such as: Computer-Aided Design, Engineering, Process Planning and Manufacturing, Product Data and Life-Cycle Management, simulation and virtual reality, automation, process control, shop-floor scheduling, decision making, Manufacturing Resource Planning, Enterprise Resource Planning, logistics, Supply Chain Management, and e-commerce systems. 3. Teaching / Learning Factory Teaching Factory is a new paradigm for manufacturing education, which links together industrial and academic / research actors around Europe. It operates as a virtual forum of actors around manufacturing, organizing learning content and delivery mechanisms on a modular basis, matching learning demands and offers from manufacturing actors, and facilitating the launch of learning/training channels communicating manufacturing knowledge. 4. Manufacturing Networks for Mass Customization Mass customization is an established production paradigm that focuses on offering products adapted to the customer?s individual needs, with costs comparable to that of mass production. However, realizing mass customization is very challenging for companies, because it involves strategic level decisions and radical modifications of the manufacturing and distribution network, so that manufacturers can maintain their competitiveness and profitability in the global landscape.
