Water, essential for life and economic development

General description

Did you ever think twice while flushing the toilet or taking a shower? Did you ever catch yourself thinking “it’s only water…” It’s a shame that sometimes not only water itself, but also our respect for it disappears down the drain. The availabilty of drinkable water seems evident, but it is a luxury we should never take for granted. It’s a painful constatation that 1.6 million children die every year because they do not have access to clean water.

Besides its role as creator and sustainor of life, water has always been a main actor in economic development around the globe. We all know many major cities or even entire civilisations were founded near great rivers or coast lines. Today approximately three quarters of the world trade takes place over water, and this number is still growing !

However every now and then, water is responsible for great damage. Every year floods make millions of people homeless worldwide. It is a great challenge for future engineers tot protect mankind from such disasters.

During two great weeks we want to focus on all of these theme’s. Belgium ranks at the top of the international dredging industry and we are proud to have the support of these world leading companies. Join us on this exciting learning event, you’ll be in the reliable hands of LBG Ghent and of course we’ll drink a lot of water ! (and derived products)
